Accommodation and Resources
All the Science laboratories are located in the Tower Block and occupy the rooms from the 2nd floor to the 4th floor.

The Science Faculty operates a Primary 7 Science transition programme for all our cluster Primary schools. This delivers a number of Science lessons to all our cluster Primary schools. This programme concludes with a celebration of success in the form of a ‘CSI Dumfries Academy’ day for all the Primary pupils.

Curriculum (BGE and Senior Phase) structure and courses
In S1-S3 all pupils will participate in a Broad General Education:
• S1 – All pupils participate in a common Science course for 4 periods per week.
• S2 / S3 – All pupils will continue to study Science (Science core) for 3 periods per week. Pupils may also choose to study Science for a further 3 periods per week (Science plus) in order to better prepare them for progression in the Sciences in the Senior Phase.
In S3-S6 pupils will progress to the appropriate courses available in the Senior Phase. The courses that are currently offered in the Science Faculty are:
• National 3 / 4 Science
• National 4 Biology / National 5 Biology
• National 4 Chemistry / National 5 Chemistry
• National 4 Physics / National 5 Physics
• Higher Biology
• Higher Human Biology
• Higher Chemistry

Learning in the classroom
Students studying in the Science Faculty will learn to:
• develop a curiosity and understanding of their environment and their place in the living, material and physical world
• demonstrate a secure knowledge and understanding of the big ideas and concepts of the sciences
• develop skills for learning, life and work
• develop skills of scientific inquiry and investigation using practical techniques
• develop skills in the accurate use of scientific language, formulae and equations
• recognise the role of creativity and inventiveness in the development of the sciences
• apply safety measures and take necessary actions to control risk and hazards
• recognise the impact the sciences make on their lives, the lives of others, the environment and on society
• develop an understanding of the Earth’s resources and the need for responsible use of them
• express opinions and make decisions on social, moral, ethical, economic and environmental issues based upon sound understanding
• develop as scientifically literate citizens with a lifelong interest in the sciences
• establish the foundation for more advanced learning and, for some, future careers in the sciences and the technologies.

All pupils should expect to receive homework in Science. This homework will be given at the discretion of the class teacher. If homework is not being completed a note will be sent to parents / carers to inform them of this situation. Some Science teachers have their classes as an Edmodo group and parents / carers can also access these to receive information regarding homework, deadline dates and assessment details. This year will also see the introduction of ‘Show My Homework’ which will allow pupils, parents and teachers to better organise and understand homework tasks.

Assessment in the Broad General Education will use both summative assessments (unit assessment tests) and formative assessments (what pupils ‘say’, ‘make’, write’ and ‘do’) to provide a holistic overview for each pupil. This will provide the basis for decisions on the most appropriate progression routes for all pupils as they make option choices for entry into the Senior Phase (S4-6).
Achievements/Extra Curricular opportunities/publicity

Extra Curricular Activities
In the Science faculty we provide a wide range of trips, activities and extra-curricular events. We have the annual S1 trip to the Glasgow Science Centre which has always proved a popular and enjoyable experience. In October 2014 there was the S1-S3 Science trip to London which includes visits to attractions such as the Centre of the Cell, The Science Museum, The Houses of Parliament and the London Eye as well as a Forensic Science lecture.

We have recently had outside agencies such as ‘Zombie Science’ and ‘Lab in a Lorry’ deliver engaging and interactive Science presentations to a variety of students from S1-S6. A Forensic Science workshop from Australia came to the Academy in May 2015. 2014 also saw the launch of the Science Club for S1/S2 students with fun Science activities being delivered during lunchtime on Wednesdays.

Relevance of subject to careers and progression routes
Science is central to everything in our lives and therefore is relevant to a huge number of career pathways and courses for study at college and university. A qualification in Chemistry could be useful in the following career areas:

Agriculture, biochemistry, brewing, chemical engineering, dentistry, dietetics, engineering, environmental health, food science, forensic science, horticulture, laboratory work, materials science, medicinal chemistry, medicine, nursing, oil and gas production, pharmaceuticals, plastics and polymers, biotechnology, quality control, research and development, biotechnology, teaching, waste management.
